Traffic on Interstate 26 during Hurricane Floyd Evacuation

Welcome to SELL

What and Why

In 2005 nearly 14 million visitors vacationed along the Grand Strand according to the Myrtle Beach Association Chamber of Commerce. The majority of people take their vacation during the summer and warmer months of the year. This coincides with the hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean beginning in May and ending in November. Safely evacuating hundreds of thousands of vacationers at any one given time in addition to the tens of thousands of permanent residents in advance of a hurricane is no easy task. Well planned and identified evacuation routes are a key to moving massive numbers of people inland and away from the coast. The purpose of this project is to study and recommend an evacuation route specifically for the southern portion of the Grand Strand also known as the South Strand.
